Sydney Jazz Orchestra in Workshop Mode

TIM ORAM – SJO Band Director, Conductor, Educator, Composer.

Tim Oram’s depth of experience in performing and conducting small and large ensembles is the solid foundation of his credentials that ultimately produce a polished performance through regular ensemble work.

To achieve this, his aim is to ensure the musicians strive for attention to detail and in his role as conductor, he takes them through the vital elements of playing that are all encompassing in working through a score.

During rehearsals, tuning, balance, rhythm and timekeeping are the core elements that musicians should apply to their performance to reach full potential and communication between the conductor and musicians is the key to a successful performance.

“These elements should be considered in any ensemble performance – large or small” Tim says “ and it takes hard work. If the musicians practice these in rehearsals, there will be a sense of enjoyment when the performance goes public. It’s all about working to create a great sound.”

The Sydney Jazz Orchestra provides a unique opportunity for school music/band programs to interact and learn from some of the most in demand musicians in Australia.

In a combination workshop/concert setting the Sydney Jazz Orchestra will provide your music students with the following music educational outcomes:

  • To learn and be inspired by section leaders of the Sydney Jazz Orchestra. The Sydney Jazz Orchestra will come to your school prior to an evening concert to mentor and tutor students in your school band on your chosen repertoire. This will enable students to learn from rhythm section, saxophone, trombone and trumpet specialists.
  • Front row seating at the evening concert to hear and see the Sydney Jazz Orchestra in action.
  • Perform as an ensemble in a joint concert in the evening.
  • Combine in performance. The Sydney Jazz Orchestra will play along with your school band for your students to trade solos with professional musicians and hear their individual instrumental parts played by a professional ensemble.
Education Workshops

The Sydney Jazz Orchestra can cater to any of your educational needs..

from conducting workshops on improvisation to workshops on how to gel as an ensemble.

  • A combination workshop and performance will assist your students:

    • To become better ensemble players through learning about section / ensemble balance, blend, stylistic interpretation and jazz articulation.
    • To observe professional musicians and understand what it takes to become a proficient instrumentalist.
    • To seek advice from professional musicians about instrument specific issues that often arise in big band playing.

“These exceptional professional musicians gave our young musicians many suggestions and tips for how to get the best, most musical performances in a positive and constructive manner.

I would recommend that any school with a stage band or jazz program take advantage of the opportunity to invite SJO to visit for workshops, clinics and a performance. The experience of hearing and playing alongside the outstanding SJO musicians gave our students a truly unique experience that they will carry with them as they continue on their musical journey, exploring the exciting and challenging genre of big band and jazz music.”

“The Sydney Jazz Orchestra provided a thorough educational experience for our jazz band. Having each of the bands section leaders as part of the afternoon workshop was a key component of the program’s success. This enabled students to get expert tuition in the art of big band playing pertaining to their specific instrument and section. The day was capped off with an entertaining concert shared between our school band and the Sydney Jazz Orchestra with the finale being a combined performance where our students had the opportunity to trade solos with some of the countries most in demand musicians. A thoroughly worthwhile educational and entertaining evening.”
